Active School Week 2021

This year's ASW had a different feel to it than any other previous year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. We very much like to focus on what we can do rather than what limits us and, after holding a full staff meeting in advance, it was decided to go full steam ahead with planning for a fun filled week of physical activities.

We adopted the "Active at School" and "Active at Home" approach recommended by the ASF team and put together a timetable of enjoyable events for the week. Thankfully, the weather from Monday to Friday was on our side and the dry conditions meant that we could provide a variety of physical experiences for the pupils outdoors in keeping with current safety guidelines from the HSE.

Each class (in their own bubbles) completed three activities in school per day - two short bursts of exercise (Daily Mile, decrease sedentary time options etc.) and one longer event as follows:
  • Monday - Active Walkway
  • Tuesday - Sports Day (J.I. - 2nd); Orienteering trail (3rd - 6th)
  • Wednesday - Orienteering trail (J.I. - 2nd); Sports Day (3rd - 6th)
  • Thursday - Internal class competitions in soccer and basketball
  • Friday - Raise the new active school flag celebrations; Local Hero Day
At home, pupils completed two further activities each evening. Teacher daily challenges took centre stage as staff from the school put their reputations on the line to try beat their students in various tasks that brought great joy to us all. We also had the support of two local GAA heroes and Irish Olympians in setting our daily challenges.

Daily Challenges

Monday Challenge - Ms' O' Shea
Tuesday Challenge - Irish Olympians
Wednesday Challenge - Ms. Neville
Thursday Challenge - Cycling Ireland
Friday Local Hero Challenges: Gaelic Football with Kerry Ladies star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh
and Hurling with Kerry and Lixnaw icon Shane Conway
Saturday Challenge - Mr. Enright
For Sunday, our final day of ASW 2021, we have a series of Hurling challenges provided to you by the Trenchs.
