Primary School Sports
The curtain on the sporting calendar always culminates with the Primary School Sports. This is a track and field event that is open to primary school pupils to compete in and is fiercely competitive.
The North Kerry meet took place in Emmets GAA Grounds in late May with many boys and girls running, jumping, throwing and taking part in team races. We had great success with a massive haul of medals coming back to Dromclough. We won Overall Best School in the boys category for the fifth year in a row!

Pupils who won medals in Listowel qualified for the County Finals in An Ríocht athletics track in Castleisland in early June. Here, we came away with six medals which was a fantastic return. All three boys' relay teams that competed reached the podium while we also had three individual successes (photos attached below). Well done to all our dedicated runners who wore the jersey with great pride.
Cumann na mBunscol Hurling
In May, a team of 11 boys from 5th and 6th classes competed in the district qualifiers run by Cumann na mBunscol. In what was very warm conditions Dromclough won all their three matches and topped their group. The following week, we competed in the County Final held in Abbeydorney. We met strong opposition in the final and came up short but the boys did us proud and received lovely runners-up medals and a DVD of the recorded match for their efforts.
GAA Skills Competition
Also in May, boys and girls from 5th and 6th classes represented the school in the annual football, hurling and camogie skills competitions organised by Kerry GAA.
In football, our girls team of Aideen, Becky and Aisling did well finishing in mid-table. Our boys selection of Donnacha, Michael and Corey won their team event with Michael taking the overall first prize in the individual category. Later in the month, they competed in the Co. Finals finishing just outside the prizes. Congrats to all six pupils for representing the school so well.

The following week, we sent four pupils to the hurling and camogie skills in Crotta. Our sole girl to compete was Ava (maith thú Ava) while a team of three boys went: Corey, Michael and John Joe. They all enjoyed the experience and were given constructive feedback on where they can improve their skills for the future.
Basketball
Ms. Dillon has been very busy training our senior pupils (5th and 6th) the skills of basketball.
In April, our girls team competed in two events, Firstly, they took part in an Easter Blitz in Duagh while most recently they lined out in the Super Slam Schools Basketball Blitz held in Killarney. Some fine basketball was played by our girls who improved with each outing.
In May, our boys team also took part in the Super Slam Blitz. They qualified for Finals night where they came so close to victory losing out by just 2 points in a nail biting match.
This was our first year playing competitive school basketball in a long time and it was a tremendous experience for all those involved. We look forward to more opportunities on the basketball court in the future.

Cumann na mBunscol Mini 7s
Victory for Dromclough!
In March, Dromclough N.S. Boys Mini 7s team were crowned North Kerry Champions. They topped their group before going on a march through the knock-out stages to reach the Final. In an exciting and tense match our boys dug deep to come away with a well deserved win and a first Mini 7s title for the school since 2014!
Michael Somers (team captain) was named Player of the Tournament.
Later in the month, the team went on to represent North Kerry in the Co. Finals in Austin Stack Park. Here, they did not get the rub of the green in two tight games but acquitted themselves very well. All in all, a great experience and lots of happy memories for these young and upcoming footballers.

Cross Country Running
Cross country running is not for the faint hearted! It is endurance running often in difficult underfoot conditions and requires a lot of determination to complete each and every race. Nevertheless, pupils from 3rd-6th classes showed great interest in taking part in the trial races within the school and from this we selected four teams to go forward to the county competition in Tralee in February. Over 120 competitors ran in each race highlighting the growing interest in this sporting discipline in schools within the county. All our four groups ran their hearts out and did their very best. In particular, we congratulate the four boys from 3rd/4th classes who took a team silver medal - a mighty achievement.

Badminton
Three school teams competed in the Kerry Primary Schools Badminton competition held in Tralee Sports and Leisure Centre in January.
All pupils involved played superb badminton and were very successful in their matches. Results were as follows:

All 16 boys and girls went on to play in the Munster Primary Schools Badminton Championships in the University of Limerick the following month. Again, they played very well and impressed us all. The Boys Buí and the Girls team were 2nd in their group but with only the top team qualifying for the knockout stages they just came up short. The Boys Glas team won their group and reached the quarter-final where theu were narrowly beaten in a match that could have gone either way.
All our pupils had an enjoyable day and gained valuable experience playing at such a high level.
Cumann na mBunscol 15-a-side Football
In Term 1, our boys football team competed in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Chiarraí Urban 3 group.
One win and one defeat in the group stage set us up for an away quarter-final. Inspite of giving a good account of themselves, the boys came up short in this match and bowed out of the competition.
In Term 3, our girls competed in the Urban 2 group. One win and one defeat was also enough for them to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament but here East Kerry opposition proved too strong.

Halloween Disco October 2022
Pupils and staff enjoyed a day of active entertainment on the Friday of the midterm break.
Firstly, each class took part in Halloween-themed activities in the Halla Mór such as "tik-tac-toe", "pin the nose on the witch" and pumpkin bowling.
In the afternoon, a fashion parade of all the wonderful Halloween costumes was on display and following this, all boys and girls participated in a fun disco led by members of staff. We danced and bopped to sons such as: Ghostbhosters, Baby Shark Dance and Monster Mosh where two friendly "monsters" joined us, much to the excitement of everybody present.
Have a look through the photos below which highlight the occasion.
